Start with an ordinary Tuesday
A great Austin home search starts with your everyday life. Before building a list of properties, write down the places you visit most: work, groceries, a favorite activity, and the people you spend time with. Then decide which trips you want to keep short and where you can be flexible.
A neighborhood can be wonderful to visit and still feel inconvenient for your routine. Use your actual destinations as the starting point, then let the home search follow.
Explore a few different sides of Austin
Austin offers plenty of ways to spend an afternoon. Downtown brings together theaters, restaurants, and music venues. North Austin offers shopping and a wide range of dining options. Mueller occupies the site of the former municipal airport. These are starting points for exploration, rather than a ranking of where you should live. Explore Visit Austin’s neighborhood guide ↗
Choose two or three areas that interest you and spend time there between showings. Walk a public street, stop for coffee, and notice how the surroundings feel at the times you would normally be out.
Test the trip, not just the distance
A short distance on a map does not tell the whole story. Check the journey to your regular destinations around your usual departure times. If you plan to walk, cycle, or use transit, look at the actual route from each property rather than assuming the entire neighborhood has the same connections.
Visit again at a different time when possible. Pay attention to traffic, parking, nearby activity, and the sounds you can hear from inside the home.
Compare the home and its surroundings together
Use the same short checklist after every showing: layout, outdoor space, storage, maintenance needs, and the trips you expect to make each week. Note what you observed separately from questions you still need answered.
For a condo or a home in an association, ask for the applicable rules and details about parking and shared amenities. Verify property-specific information before relying on it. A little structure makes it easier to compare homes after several busy days of touring.
Turn your observations into a focused search
Bring your notes to Brandon Taylor and identify the priorities that keep coming up. Perhaps a flexible work area matters more than an extra bedroom, or a convenient grocery trip matters more than being near a weekend destination. Those details can help narrow your search to homes that fit the way you actually live.
